Kim Soo-hyun (Hangul: 김수현; born February 16, 1988) is one of South Korea’s most accomplished and highest-paid actors. Over the years, he has built an impressive career marked by both critical acclaim and widespread popularity.
He has received numerous prestigious awards, including four Baeksang Arts Awards, two Grand Bell Awards, and a Blue Dragon Film Award. His influence in the entertainment industry has also been recognized through multiple appearances on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity 40 list (from 2012 to 2016 and again in 2021). In 2014, he was named Gallup Korea’s Television Actor of the Year, and in 2016, he was featured in Forbes Asia’s “30 Under 30” list.
Kim’s journey into acting began during his school years when his mother encouraged him to take acting classes to overcome his introverted nature. After participating in several stage productions, he made his television debut in 2007 with the family sitcom Kimchi Cheese Smile.
He rose to prominence with leading roles in hit dramas such as Dream High (2011) and Moon Embracing the Sun (2012), as well as blockbuster films like The Thieves (2012) and Secretly, Greatly (2013). His portrayal of King Lee Hwon in Moon Embracing the Sun earned him the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actor (Television).
Kim Soo-hyun’s global popularity soared with the success of the fantasy romantic comedy My Love from the Star (2013) and the variety-drama The Producers (2015), the latter earning him three Daesang (Grand Prize) awards. Following his role in the film Real (2017), he temporarily stepped away from the spotlight to fulfill his mandatory military service.
In January 2020, he joined the entertainment agency Gold Medalist as one of its leading actors alongside Seo Yea-ji. He made a successful return to television with the critically acclaimed drama It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020) and later starred in the thriller series One Ordinary Day (2021), further solidifying his position as one of Korea’s top actors.
